Miami Central Holds Off American Heritage

Two defending FHSAA state championship teams clashed on Friday night in Plantation as the Miami Central Rockets defeated the American Heritage Stallions 41-28 at Heritage Field in a Class 5A regional semifinal. The Rockets are the reigning Class 6A state champions while the Patriots are the defending Class 5A state champions.
Miami Central(9-2) got out to a 6-0 lead at the 8:44 mark of the first quarter. Quarterback Keyone Jenkins rolled out right and then cut diagonally toward the left sideline on a 43-yard touchdown run.
American Heritage(6-4) answered back on their next possession. Running back Mark Fletcher rushed up the middle from nine yards out to give them a 7-6 lead with 4:55 left in the first.
The Patriots recovered a fumble on the Rockets next drive. Fletcher scored his second touchdown of the contest with 3:51 to go in the quarter for a 14-6 lead.
It became 21-6 for the Pats at 9:35 of the second quarter. Linebacker Jamarcus Smith intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 81 yards for the score.
The Rockets responded and cut the deficit to 21-14 with 6:06 remaining in the second. Quarterback Dylan Tulloch raced to the right sideline and then down the right hash marks for a 24-yard touchdown.
Late in the second quarter, Miami Central trailed 21-20 with 54 seconds left in the first half. Running back Jonathan Harris rushed in from 15 yards away.
In the third quarter, the Rockets regained the lead 26-21 at the 7:04 mark. Jenkins connected a throw to wide receiver Joshisa Trader and he sprinted down the right hash marks on a 58-yard touchdown pass.
Miami Central expanded their lead to 34-21 with 4:59 remaining in the fourth quarter. Jenkins fired a 32-yard touchdown pass to Trader on the left sideline in front of the end zone.
The Patriots lost the ball on downs at their own 10-yard line. The Rockets capitalized as Tulloch completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Zaylan Reese and they made it 41-21 with 3:51 to go in the fourth. Miami Central had put together 35 unanswered points at that point.
American Heritage got one more scoring play with 2:10 left in the game. Quarterback Brandon Inniss lobbed a seven-yard pass to wide receiver Isaiah Nesmith on the left side of the end zone and they were down 41-28.
