Panthers Get Revenge On Devils

The Florida Panthers burned the New Jersey Devils 4-1 on Thursday night at FLA Live Arena. The Panthers are a perfect 9-0-0 at home and became the seventh team in NHL history to win their first nine home games to begin a season. The Panthers lost to the Devils 7-3 in New Jersey nine days ago. Spencer Knight set a Florida franchise history with 45 saves in a game by a rookie goalie.
New Jersey(7-5-3) took a 1-0 lead with 6:23 left in the first period. P.K. Subban sent a lead pass to Jimmy Vesey at the red line and he carried it in to the right corner. He angled it to the middle and Dougie Hamilton put in a wrist shot from the right circle by Knight for his fifth goal of the season. It was his 11th career goal against the Panthers.
Florida(12-2-3) tied it up 1-1 with 6.4 seconds remaining in the first. MacKenzie Weegar made a left-outlet pass from his own defensive zone. Carter Verhaeghe raced through the neutral zone down the left side and scored on a snap shot from above the top left circle past Mackenzie Blackwood for his fifth tally of the campaign.
In the second period, the Panthers compiled three goals in a five minute and 17 second stretch. They made it 2-1 at the 3:08 mark. Patric Hornqvist pushed the puck from the end wall and Ryan Lomberg shipped a cross-ice pass from the low left circle. Eetu Luostarinen poked in a shot from the crease area for his sixth goal this year.
It became 3-1 for the Cats at 4:25. Anthony Duclair connected a diagonal cross-ice pass from the Panthers blue line to Jonathan Huberdeau at the Devils blue line. He hustled to the right circle and snapped a shot for his sixth goal.
The Panthers increased it to a three-goal margin 4-1 with 11:45 to go in the second. Aaron Ekblad forwarded the puck from the right point to Huberdeau near the right corner. He found Duclair in the low slot on a backdoor play and Duclair put in a forehand shot from the blue paint for his ninth goal this season.
