Champagnat Catholic Tops University Christian For 2A Title

     The Champagnat Catholic Lions defeated the University Christian Christians 41-27 in the FHSAA Class 2A state championship game at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Wednesday. The Lions captured their second straight state title and third in the last four years. 
     Champagnat Catholic(11-2) scored on their first possession 27 seconds into the contest. Quarterback Tyous Taylor made a swing pass to his left and wide receiver Benson Prosper went down the left sideline on a 51-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead.
     The Lions extended it to a 14-point margin with the same connection at the 6:44 mark. Taylor released an 18-yard pass to the left sideline, Prosper cut to the left numbers and reached the end zone. 
     University Christian(8-5) cut the lead to 14-7 with 2:32 left. Running back Joe Carter went around the left end and scored from 12 yards away. 
     In the second quarter, the Christians took the lead 15-14 with 3:29 remaining. Running back Orel Gray slowly surged up the middle of the field from ten yards out. They were also able to get the two-point conversion on a run by Gray.  
     The third quarter would belong to Champagnat Catholic. They regained the lead at 9:08 of the third quarter to make it 20-15. Running back Donovan Jones raced in on a 47-yard touchdown run. 
     The Lions expanded it to 26-15 with 2:23 to go in the third. Prosper caught his third touchdown pass reception of the game from Taylor on a 14-yard pass play. 
     University Christian answered back with 23 seconds left in the third and they trailed 26-21. Quarterback Desirrio Riles found wide receiver Ja'won Grey on the left hash marks for a 66-yard touchdown. 
     It became 34-21 for Champagnat Catholic at the 9:33 mark of the fourth quarter. Wide receiver Malik Rutherford went off-left tackle to score an eight-yard touchdown and they made a two-point conversion when Taylor zipped a pass to wide receiver Kelvin Blount. 
     The Christians made it 34-27 with 6:23 remaining in the fourth. Gray was able to rumble in from nine yards away. 
     The Lions scored with 2:33 left and they had a 41-27 lead. Rutherford made a one-handed catch in the back right corner of the end zone on a ten-yard touchdown pass by Taylor.
