The defending Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs got by the Miami Dolphins 33-27 at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday. The Chiefs won their first Super Bowl in 50 years on the same field back in February over the San Francisco 49ers.
Miami(8-5) took the lead 7-0 with 1:35 left in the first quarter. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa rolled out to his right and tossed a seven-yard pass to tight end Mike Gesicki.
The Dolphins expanded it to a 10-0 at the 10:14 mark. Jason Sanders was able to kick a 31-yard field goal.
Kansas City(12-1) got on the scoreboard at 8:10 of the second and they were down 10-7. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes gave a reverse handoff to wide receiver Tyreek Hill and he sprinted down the right sideline for a 31-yard score.
The Chiefs moved in front 14-10 with 37 second remaining in the first half. Mahomes ran to the right sideline and found tight end Travis Kelce in the front right side of the end zone for a seven-yard pass.
Kansas City extended their lead when Mahomes connected a 44-yard touchdown pass to Hill at 13:50 of the third quarter. Mecole Hardman added a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown just over a minute later. Tagovailoa was later sacked in the end zone by Chris Jones for a safety and the Chiefs had a 30-10 lead with 6:52 remaining in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Miami cut into the deficit. Tagovailoa fired a 29-yard touchdown pass to Gesicki on the left side of the end zone at the 12:03 mark. Tagovailoa then plunged in with a one-yard quarterback sneak with 4:15 remaining in the fourth and they trailed 30-24.
Both teams exchanged field goals down the stretch. Harrison Butker hit one from 46 yards for Kansas City with 1:08 to go and Sanders booted one for the Dolphins from 44 yards out with 16 seconds left.
