St. Thomas Aquinas Wins 12th State Title

     The St. Thomas Aquinas captured a state-record 12th FHSAA football state championship as they defeated the Edgewater Eagles 31-21 on Saturday night in the Class 7A game at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. The Raiders surpassed the Bolles Bulldogs who have won 11 state titles. 
     St. Thomas Aquinas won their second straight Class 7A state title over Edgewater. STA now have five state championships in their last seven seasons and nine in the last 14 years.
     The Raiders moved out in front 7-0 at 6:21 of the first quarter. Running back Anthony Hankerson raced around the right end and scored from four yards away. 
     Edgewater(8-3) evened it up 7-7 at the 6:52 mark of the second quarter. Running back Cedric Baxter went to the left and then cut down the left hash marks for a nine-yard touchdown. 
     St. Thomas Aquinas(8-1) regained the lead 14-7 with 2:52 left in the second. Hankerson blasted through two tackles down the right hash marks and reached the end zone from 12 yards. 
     It became a 14-point lead for the Raiders with 1:32 remaining. Edgewater quarterback Canaan Mobley threw an interception and Raiders linebacker Ja'Den McBurrows returned it for a touchdown. 
     The Eagles got a score with 13 seconds to go in the first half and they trailed 21-14. Baxter rushed to the right side of the end zone from three yards out. 
     In the third quarter, STA made it 24-14 at 3:11. They were able to get a 33-yard field goal from Max Larson. 
     Edgewater closed the gap to 24-21 with 1:31 remaining in the third. Running back Jeremiah Connelley pounded up the middle four yards to reach the end zone
     The Raiders extended it at 31-21 at the 9:15 mark of the fourth quarter. Hankerson compiled his third touchdown of the contest as he scored from nine yards.
