For the second time in three games, the Miami Marlins were shut out by the Atlanta Braves. This time it was 8-0 on Wednesday night at Marlins Park as the Bravos swept the three-game series.
Miami(1-8) starting pitcher Alex Sanabia dropped to 0-2 as he went five innings and gave up six runs, all of which happened in the fifth inning, on eight hits. Braves starter Mike Minor pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed no runs on five hits and improved to 2-0 this season.
Atlanta(8-1) scored six runs in the fifth inning to take a substantial lead. Jordan Schafer led off with a bunt single and then stole second. Two batters later, he scored on a single by Andrelton Simmons into right field. After Jason Heyward walked and Justin Upton flied out, Evan Gattis blasted a three-run homer to left field on a 1-0 pitch for a Braves 4-0 lead. Former Marlin Dan Uggla walked next, then Juan Francisco smacked a two-run homer to center field on the first pitch.
The Braves extended their lead with another run in the sixth inning as Ryan Webb came in to relieve for Sanabia. Schafer got a double to center field to start the frame and Simmons sacrificed him in two batters later.
The Marlins gave up a run in the ninth inning on a two-out rally as John Maine pitched the final inning for the Fish. Uggla singled to left and advanced to second on a base hit to center by Francisco. Chris Johnson brought in Uggla on a single into right field.
