The Miami Marlins won a low-scoring game against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night at Great American Ball Park with a 2-1 victory. It was only the second time this season that the Marlins broke a tie in the ninth inning.
Cincinnati(9-8) put up the first run of the game during the first inning against Marlins starting pitcher Kevin Slowey. Shin Soo-Choo led off for the Red Legs with a triple into deep center field. Two batters later, Choo scored on a sacrifice fly by Joey Votto to left field.
Nick Green started Miami(4-13) in the third inning with a base hit to center. He advanced to second on a single by Donovan Solano to left. Both runners moved one base over on a sacrifice bunt by Slowey. With two out, Placido Polanco singled to right field off Reds starting pitcher Mat Latos as Green scored and Solano was tagged out at the plate.
Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman took the mound in the ninth inning. Justin Ruggiano pounded a solo home run to center field on a 3-1 count for the go-ahead run and a Marlins 2-1 lead. It was his third homer of the season. Steve Cishek came in and got the save for Miami in the ninth inning.
Slowey went six innings for the Fish and allowed one run on four hits while Latos gave up one run on six hits and struck out ten in seven innings pitched. Chapman took the loss and dropped to 2-1 and Marlins pitcher Mike Bunn got his first win of the season.
