The Miami Marlins opened the 2013 season in Washington D.C. and were shut down by the Nationals 2-0 on Monday at Nationals Park. Mike Redmond made his debut as the new Marlins manager as Miami collected only three hits in the game. The Marlins made their major league baseball debut 20 years ago this week.
Washington(1-0) got help from their youth movement as Bryce Harper hit two solo home runs off Marlins starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco. Nationals starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg went seven innings, surrendered three hits, retired 19 straight batters and struck out three for his first win. Nolasco gave up two runs on three hits in six innings for the loss.
Harper hit a two-out solo homer to right field on a 1-0 pitch in the first inning and then got a lead-off solo home run to right in the fourth inning on a 3-2 pitch against Nolasco. He became the youngest player in baseball history to hit two home runs on opening day.
The best chance for Miami(0-1) to score was in the seventh inning. Giancarlo Stanton hit a one-out double to left field and advanced to third on an infield single by newcomer Placido Polanco. Rob Brantly lined out to left and Harper threw a rope to home plate. Polanco got caught in a rundown between first and second which resulted in Stanton being tagged out at the plate.
