The Florida Panthers visited Madison Square Garden on Thursday night and fell to the New York Rangers 6-1. Alex Petrovic made his NHL debut as a defenseman for the Cats. The Panthers are now 0-2 on this four-game road trip.
New York(22-17-4) scored on a power-play goal at 3:55 of the first period. Ryan Callahan's shot from the top of the crease was saved by Scott Clemmensen. Rick Nash circled around at the right of the net and passed the puck in front. Derick Brassard put in the wrist shot for a 1-0 lead.
The Rangers converted of their second power play of the game at 9:10. Callahan threw a cross-ice backhand pass from the left wing of the Panthers zone to Nash who then ripped a slap shot from the top right circle.
Florida(13-24-6) cut the lead down to 2-1 with 4:43 left in the first period. Shawn Matthias charged into the Rangers zone and made a drop pass to Jonathan Huberdeau. He skated through the right circle and snapped a shot by Henrik Lundqvist. It was the 14th goal this season by Huberdeau.
The Blueshirts regained the two-goal lead with 3:26 remaining in the second period. Ryan Clowe had the puck in the right corner and sent the puck with a backhand off the side of the net and bounced in front. Mats Zuccarello took a backhand shot from the top of the crease for the tally.
The Panthers gave up three goals to the Rangers in the final five minutes of the third period. Zuccarello scored his second goal of the game at 15:11 on a deflection, Brassard added his second goal on a slap shot at 16:35 and Brad Richards put in a wraparound shot at 18:36.
The Cats were 0-for-1 on the power play while the Rangers were 2-for-4. Clemmensen made 24 saves on 30 shots and dropped to 3-7-2. Lundqvist stopped 34 of 35 shots and rose to 20-15-3. The Panthers stay in the New York metropolitan area for the next several days as they visit the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.
