After having Monday's game postponed due to snow, the Miami Marlins played in very cold weather and lost to the Minnesota Twins 4-3 at Target Field on Tuesday afternoon. It was the first game of a day-night doubleheader. Marlins manager Mike Redmond played for the Twins from 2005 until 2009.
Minnesota(9-7) got going in the first inning to take the initial lead. Brian Dozier led off with a triple into deep center field. Three batters later, Justin Morneau grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop for Dozier to score for a Twins 1-0 lead.
Miami(4-16) picked up a two-out rally against Kevin Correia during the fourth inning and took the lead. Greg Dobbs singled to shallow left and advanced to third on a double to left field by Justin Ruggiano. Joe Mahoney followed with a two-run double into right field for Dobbs and Ruggiano to score.
The Twins regained the lead in the bottom of the frame. Chris Parmelee singled to center field then Trevor Plouffe got a base hit to right. Oswaldo Arcia smashed a three-run homer to right field on the first pitch from Jose Fernandez as Minnesota moved ahead 4-2.
The Fish closed the deficit in the eighth inning as Jared Burton relieved for Correia. Juan Pierre hit a one-out double down the right-field line. Ruggiano and Giancarlo Stanton were both hit by pitches and that loaded the bases. Pierre scored as Dobbs grounded out softly to shortstop after it was tipped by Burton on the mound.
Fernandez went five innings for the Marlins and gave up four runs on six hits and dropped to 0-2. Correia got the win as he allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings and improved to 2-1.
