The Florida Panthers ended the regular season with a 5-3 win over to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night at Tampa Bay Times Forum. The Panthers finished last in the NHL this season and will be involved in the draft lottery drawing on Monday night. The team will either have the number one or number two overall pick on June 30.
Tampa Bay(18-26-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead during the first period. Matt Carle scored at 5:00 on a slap shot and Ryan Malone followed with a goal at 13:14 on a wrist host.
Nick Bjugstad scored his first NHL goal for Florida(15-27-6) from close range on a wrist shot with 3:06 remaining in the opening frame. The Panthers struck early in the second period just 54 seconds in as Tomas Fleischmann picked up his 11th goal of the season on a slap shot.
The Lightning regained the lead as Martin St. Louis scored on a wrist shot at 5:47. He captured the Art Ross Trophy with the most points by a player this season with 17 goals and 43 assists. St. Louis becomes the oldest player ever to win the award at 37 years old.
The Panthers came back with three goals in the third period to get the victory. Scottie Upshall tied the game 3-3 at 5:30 with his fourth goal of the year on a wrist shot. Fleischmann put in his second goal of the game and 12th overall on a wrist shot to move the Cats ahead at 13:53. Marcel Goc got his ninth tally of the season with 49 seconds left as he put the puck into an empty net.
Jacob Markstrom finished the season with a 8-14-1 record as he stopped 28 of 31 shots. Anders Lindback dropped to 10-10-1 as he turned away 27 of 31 shots. There were no power-play goals as the Cats were 0-for-1 and the Bolts were 0-for-2. Both teams will remain in the same division with the new NHL realignment next season.
