It was not the start that the Miami Marlins wanted as they were swept in the third game of a three-game series 6-1 by the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on Thursday. The Marlins were held to just one run in their first three games of the new season as they were outscored 11-1.
Washington(3-0) scored quickly in the first inning as they put up two runs. Jason Werth got a one-out single to left field and Bryce Harper followed with a single to right field. Ryan Zimmerman then knocked both of them in on a double to deep center off Wade LeBlanc.
Miami(0-3) responded immediately in the second inning to make it 2-1. Justin Ruggiano smacked a lead-off home run on the first pitch against Jordan Zimmermann to right field. It was the first time the Marlins scored in 20 innings.
The Nationals extended the margin to 3-1 during the third inning. Denard Span got on base with a bunt single and went to second on a throwing error. After Werth struck out, Harper drove in Span on a one-out single to right field.
The Nats put the game away in the seventh inning. With Wilson Ramos on third , Span on first and one out, Werth bashed a 1-1 pitch against Mike Dunn over the left-center field wall for a three-run homer.
LeBlanc went five innings for the Fish, gave up two earned runs on five hits and struck out five. Zimmermann pitched six innings and surrendered one run on eight hits for Washington.
