The Florida Panthers were affected Wednesday during the NHL trade deadline on Wednesday as right wing Mike Santorelli and center Jerred Smithson are gone from the team. The team is currently in last place in the Eastern Conference with the season ending in less than three weeks.
Santorelli was put on waivers again earlier this week and was picked up by the Winnipeg Jets. He had been shifted to right wing with the influx of centers on the roster. His scoring output dropped this season as he had two goals and one assists in 24 games for the Cats. He was acquired from the Nashville Predators prior to the 2010-11 season.
Smithson was traded to the Edmonton Oilers for a fourth-round draft pick. He was a late pickup last season from the Nashville Predators by the Panthers on their way to the playoffs. He was used as a center on the fourth line for the club and led Florida in faceoff percentage at 54.3 percent. He just had two goals and three assists in 35 games this season for the Cats.
