It took 15 innings as the Miami Marlins slipped by the New York Mets 4-3 on Monday night at Marlins Park. It was the longest game played between both clubs in their 20-year rivalry. The Fish won two consecutive games for the first time this season.
Juan Pierre led off the third inning for Miami(7-19) with a single into center field off Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey and advanced to third on a base hit by Donovan Solano to right-center field. Giancarlo Stanton grounded into a double play as Pierre scored and gave the Marlins a 1-0 lead.
New York(10-14) took the lead in the fourth inning against Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez as Lucas Duda started the frame with a walk. Former Marlin John Buck followed with a two-run homer to left-center field on a 1-2 pitch for his ninth home run of the season.
The Marlins were able to tie the game in the ninth inning against Mets closer Bobby Parnell. Justin Ruggiano led off with a double to deep right field and went to third on a single by Rob Brantly into center field. Nick Green hit a sacrifice fly to right field for Ruggiano to score and made it 2-2.
The Mets broke the tie game in the 15th inning against Jon Rauch. Duda doubled to deep right field with one out and advanced to third base on wild pitch three batters later. Ruben Tejada picked up an infield hit to shortstop which scored Duda.
The Fish responded in the bottom of the 15th to win the contest with a one-out rally against Shaun Marcum. Greg Dobbs singled to center field and Ruggiano walked. Dobbs scored on a Brantly single to right as Ruggiano went to third. He scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Green to left field.
Fernandez went four innings for the Marlins and allowed two runs on three hits. Harvey gave up one run on seven hits and struck out seven in 5 1/3 innings pitched. Rauch improved to 1-2 as he surrendered one run on three hits and struck out five. Marcum fell to 0-2 and he allowed two runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.
