The Miami Marlins completed their six-game road trip with a 4-3 defeat to the New York Mets on Sunday at Citi Field. Marlins pitcher Jose Hernandez made his major league debut as he went five innings, struck out eight and gave up one run on three hits. He set a Marlins franchise record for the most strikeouts by a rookie in his debut.
Miami(1-5) got a two-out rally during the third inning. Greg Dobbs ripped a line drive for a base hit to left field. Donovan Solano followed with a double into left field to score Dobbs.
The Marlins added two runs in the fourth inning and extended their lead to 3-0. Adeiny Hechavarria led off with a walk then Chris Valaika cracked an RBI-double to left field. Three batters later, Solano picked up another RBI-double into left field that brought in Valaika.
New York(4-2) gained their first run in the fifth inning to close the deficit. Ruben Tejada singled up the middle with one out. He scored as the next batter Anthony Recker nailed a double to left-center field.
Daniel Murphy pulled the Mets to 3-2 when he blasted a solo home run to center field on a 1-0 pitch off A.J Ramos in the sixth inning for his second homer of the season.
Steve Cishek came in for the save in the ninth inning, blew the opportunity and lost the game. Tejada was hit by a pitch and went to first base with one out. Pinch hitter Kirk Nieuwenhuis singled into left-center field to advance Tejada to third while Nieuwenhuis went to second on the overthrow by Juan Pierre. Marlon Byrd then rocketed a double down the left-field line past the drawn-in infield to score Tejada and Nieuwenhuis for the Mets 4-3 victory.
Mets starting pitcher Aaron Laffey pitched 4 1/3 innings, struck out five and gave up three runs on ten hits. Miami outhit New York 13-6 in the game. The Marlins have their home opener on Monday night as they take on the Atlanta Braves.
