The Calgary Flames held off the Florida Panthers 3-1 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday night. The Panthers completed a five-game road trip with a 2-3-0 record.
Calgary(13-14-5) scooted out to a 1-0 lead at the 8:45 mark of the first period. Martin Pospisil collected his fourth goal of the campaign on a backhand shot.
Florida(18-11-2) evened it up 1-1 on a power-play goal with 31 seconds remaining in the first. Sam Reinhart picked up his 18th goal of the season with a wrist shot. Former Flame Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov were credited with assists on the play. Neither team was able to score during the second period.
In the third period, the Flames added a shorthanded goal and reclaimed the lead 2-1 at 3:31. Mikael Backlund went in alone on a breakaway down the middle of the ice and backhanded a shot from the low slot for his seventh tally of the year. Noah Hanifin picked up the only assist on a lead pass from his own zone.
The Panthers had an extra attacker for a power play in the last two minutes of the contest. Blake Coleman was awarded a shorthanded goal when he had an open path to the net in the slot area and was chopped from behind by Brandon Montour for a 3-1 Calgary lead with 1:36 remaining.
