The Glades Central Raiders and the Pahokee Blue Devils face each other in the annual Muck Bowl on Saturday afternoon at Effie C. Grear Field in Belle Glade. This is considered the most historic high school football rivalry in Palm Beach County. The Raiders have won the last five meetings as the Blue Devils were last victorious in 2007.
Pahokee(6-3) had to play a three-way tiebreaker for the District 7-3A this past Monday night in West Palm Beach. They did the impossible as they came back from a 14-point deficit to defeat the American Heritage 15-14 in a one-quarter tiebreaker.
The Blue Devils then played the Cardinal Newman Crusaders in a scoreless one-quarter tiebreaker. Pahokee would fall 6-0 in the Kansas tiebreaker that followed, however they picked up the district runner-up spot and will make an appearance in the FHSAA playoffs for the first time since 2009.
Quarterback Rashaun Croney can run out of the pocket at any time and can also throw the ball. Look for running back Jay Hopson to sprint with the ball many times during the game. Wide receiver Dontrell Johnson will be the main target down the field for Croney to throw to along with Malik Thornton and Khalil Patrick.
Glades Central(4-5) finished as the District 7-4A runner-up to University School and will play Booker T. Washington, who are the top-ranked high school football program in the state and the country, in a regional semifinal on November 15 at Miami. The Raiders played one of the toughest schedules for a Palm Beach County school as four of their nine opponents eventually won a district title. They were unable to gain any momentum this season only to get a string of two straight wins.
Running back Jerry Jones leads the offensive attack for the Raiders and will get most of the carries from the backfield. There has been a quarterback controversy with the team throughout the season whether to use Giovanni Lugo or Jonathan Istache. They have many options in the wide receiver position with Ronquivion Tarver, Jamarius Way, Isiah Johnson and Istache should Lugo play at quarterback.
