Two undefeated teams play on Friday night as the Deerfield Beach Bucks travel to Miramar to take on the Patriots in a Class 8A regional semifinal. The winner of this game will host the Palm Beach Gardens-Palm Beach Central winner in a Section 3 regional final next week.
Both teams faced each other previously in the 2008 FHSAA playoffs as Geno Smith's Patriots beat Denard Robinson's Bucks 34-30 in a Class 6A regional final matchup. They also met in a 2010 6A regional quarterfinal which Miramar won 24-21.
Deerfield Beach(11-0) won by the skin of their teeth with a 14-7 overtime victory over Flanagan last week in a regional quarterfinal. They have played two of their three closest games this season over the last two weeks. The Bucks upended St. Thomas Aquinas 22-7 in the final game of the regular season for their first victory over the Raiders since 2007.
The first thing you look at is the backfield of the Bucks with running backs Brandon Powell, Aaron McNeal and Alex Pierre. All three players can break through the line of scrimmage on any running play. Quarterback Danarious Graham can throw the ball as he usually scrambles around the pocket. Graham will try to connect with wide receivers Justin Morgan and Jamal Patterson in the passing game.
Miramar(11-0) shut out five of their ten opponents during the regular season this year. The Patriots outscored their opponents 412-56 in ten games of the regular season. They allowed the most points in a game with their 31-21 victory over Monarch last week in a regional quarterfinal.
The Patriots have Nick Jeanty at quarterback and he will hand the ball off plenty of times to running backs Eric Pittman and Cameron Rigby to gain yardage. Wide receivers Kwasim West, Tyler Williams, Keygon Dunnings and Khalil Lewis look to get open downfield for receptions.
