Peter Horachek made his NHL head coaching debut with the Florida Panthers as they lost to the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Saturday at Canadian Tire Centre. The Panthers lost their eighth straight game and 14 of their last 16 games. The Cats have not won in Ottawa since 2010.
It was a wild start in this game as both teams combined for three goals in the first five minutes. Ottawa(7-6-4) jumped on the Cats with a 2-0 lead in a 19 second span. The goals by the Senators were by Kyle Turris at 1:45 and Mika Zibanejad at 2:04.
Nick Bjudstad scored his second goal of the season for Florida(3-10-4) at the 4:04 mark to narrow the gap. Tomas Kopecky picked up the only assist on the play.
Clarke MacArthur extended the Sens lead to 3-1 with a two-man advantage at 5:52 of the second period.
Marcel Goc tallied his fifth goal this year with 9:52 remaining in the third period to pull within one goal again, however the Cats were unable to take the lead. Matt Gilroy compiled his first assist in a Panthers uniform on the Goc goal.
Tim Thomas was in goal for Florida in his first appearance since October 22 against the Chicago Blackhawks and he stopped 29 shots. His record dropped to 2-4-0 this season. Robin Lehner moved to 3-2-2 he as he made 26 saves. The Panthers were 0-for-5 on the power play while the Senators were 1-for-3.
