The Deerfield Beach Bucks completed an undefeated regular season with a 22-7 victory over the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders on Friday night at Butler Stadium. It was the first time that the Bucks won their annual meeting with STA since 2007.
The Bucks will host Flanagan in a Class 8A regional quarterfinal next week while the Raiders will began to defend their 7A crown as they host Miami Springs for a regional quarterfinal next week in Fort Lauderdale.
St. Thomas Aquinas(8-2), who had their six-game winning streak snapped, got off to the lead with 4:57 left in the first quarter as running back Madre London scored on a 17-yard touchdown run and made it 7-0.
Deerfield Beach(10-0) came back as they scored 22 unanswered points the rest of the way. They scored on a 30-yard touchdown run by running back Brandon Powell at 11:27 of the second quarter, however they missed the attempt on the extra point due to a bad snap and were still down 7-6.
The Bucks got deep into Aquinas territory early in the third quarter, but they were stopped on a 4th-and-1 from outside of the Raiders one-yard line. They picked up a safety moments later and had their first lead of the game 8-7 with 8:05 left in the third.
Deerfield Beach took advantage upon the ensuing kickoff with good field position as Powell capped the next drive with a 51-yard touchdown catch on the left side from quarterback Denarious Graham at 7:39 for a 15-7 margin.
The Raiders were unable to generate a scoring opportunity in the second half. Bucks defensive back Michael Greene put the game away with 1:53 remaining in the fourth quarter as he intercepted a pass from Raiders quarterback Wade Freebeck and returned it for a touchdown and a 22-7 lead.
