The American Heritage Patriots head through Alligator Alley to Immokalee and take on the Indians in a Class 5A regional semifinal on Friday night. The Indians fell two points short of a state championship last year and want to get back to Orlando while the Patriots have underachieved in the FHSAA playoffs over the last several years.
Prior to the start of the 2013 regular season, it looked like the American Heritage(10-1) schedule was the toughest in Broward County and stacked with playoff teams from the previous year. With the exception of a 41-20 home loss during the second week to Miami Central, the Patriots conquered every team they met. They are riding a ten-game win streak into this game and have outscored their opponents 263-78 in the last five games. Heritage beat Lely easily 55-13 last week in a regional quarterfinal.
Running back Sony Michel has dominated the running back position in Broward County over the last five years on the varsity squad. He will get his allotment of carries along with Fillon Dyer in the backfield. Quarterback Torrance Gibson can run out of the option for another way of the Patriots offensive attack. They have speed in their passing game with wide receivers Isaiah McKenizie and Brandon Johnson for Gibson to connect with.
Immokalee(9-2) lost their first two games of the regular season and turned it around with nine consecutive victories. Their latest win was over Cardinal Gibbons 25-23 in a regional quarterfinal last week.
They look toward running back D'Ernest Johnson and quarterback Louinelson Celian with their power rushing attack through the line of scrimmage. Celian will try and pass the ball to wide receivers Ralph Martinez and J.C. Jackson for the Indians to get down the field.
