The Blanche Ely Tigers host the West Boca Raton Bulls on Friday night in a Class 7A regional quarterfinal. Both teams last meet in 2010 at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale for a regional quarterfinal as the Tigers prevailed 32-30. It was the last time the Bulls played in the FHSAA playoffs.
West Boca Raton(7-3) comes into this game as the District 13-7A runner-up after they fell to the Dwyer Panthers two weeks ago in Palm Beach Gardens for the district crown. The loss snapped their six-game winning streak which were all against district opponents. They should be refreshed due to having a bye last week.
Jerrod Ferguson is the lone running back that the Bulls will use as he gets all the carries from the backfield unless quarterback Paul Columbo is flushed from the pocket. Columbo will throw medium-range passes to his wide receivers which includes Antonio Cartagena, John Parisi, Aaron Ferguson and Alexander Astorga.
After being out of the playoffs last year, Blanche Ely(5-5) returns with a vengeance from their District 14-7A title. They have four consecutive victories and five of their last six games. They crushed their longtime rivals the Dillard Panthers 50-0 in the 50th annual Soul Bowl last week at Lockhart Stadium. It was the only high school football game played there during the 2013 season.
Quarterback Nelson Ervin will lead the Tigers offense as he can run out of the pocket at anytime along with throwing the ball. Tyquan Fields can be called upon in case for the need of a backup quarterback. Running backs James Jean and Terrance Blands will get most of the rushing attempts for the team. Laderrick Smith, Teddrick Moffet Jr., Edward Walker, Kenneth Rawls and Chazton McKenzie make up the arsenal of wide receivers that Ervin can throw the ball to.
