The Dwyer Panthers scored 28 unanswered points in the first 28 minutes of the game as they pounded the Blanche Ely Tigers 49-7 on Friday night at Blum Stadium in a Class 7A regional semifinal. The Tigers lost a regional quarterfinal 28-0 on the same field back in 2011. The Panthers will host the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders next week in a regional final rematch from two years ago.
Dwyer(12-0) waited until late in the first quarter to take the lead. Running back Alonso Smith rumbled up the middle from 22 yards away for a 7-0 lead at 1:19.
The Panthers added two more touchdowns during the second quarter and had a 21-0 margin at halftime. Wide receiver Shawun Lurry caught a 10-yard pass on the right side of the end zone from quarterback Shawn Parr at 10:29. Smith would get his second touchdown run of the game on a three-yard dash off-left tackle with 5:21 remaining.
Panthers running back Gerald Hearns scored on their first possession of the second half as he drove through the right side of the line from two yards out at 8:46 of the third and increased their lead to 28-0.
Blanche Ely(6-6) responded with their only scoring drive of the game at 7:15 when quarterback Nelson Ervin connected with wide receiver Edward Walker with a 40-yard touchdown reception down the right sideline to cut the gap down to 28-7.
The Tigers would surrender two more touchdowns to Dwyer by the end of the third quarter. Running back Cornelius Smith broke through a tackle after the line of scrimmage and rushed up the middle for a 20-yard score at 4:51. Lurry scored his second touchdown at 3:18 on a punt return as he raced forward for a bouncing ball and sprinted down the left sideline 26 yards into the end zone for a 42-7 lead.
A running clock began at the start of the fourth quarter due to the 35-point margin. The Panthers executed a pass on the first play when wide receiver Ezra Saffold hauled in a 38-yard touchdown pass on the left sideline 12 seconds into the fourth.
