The defending FHSAA Class 7A state champion St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders face the Dwyer Panthers at Blum Stadium on Friday night in a regional final for the second time in three years. The Raiders were also the defending Class 5A state champions back in 2011 and lost to the Panthers 6-3 in a defensive battle on the same field. Aquinas won their other playoff matchup between both schools during 2004 in a Class 5A game with the Raiders victorious 10-7.
St. Thomas Aquinas(10-2) have won eight of the their last games and were hampered earlier this season with defeats to Miramar and Deerfield Beach. Their two playoff games have been home at Brian Piccolo Stadium where they beat Miami Springs 56-0 in the regional quarterfinal and the Plantation Colonels in the regional semifinal 20-6.
The Raiders will use their ground attack of running backs Madre London, Deltron Sands and Johnnie Gaines to set up their passing game. Quarterback Wade Freebeck has a bunch of wide receivers to pass the ball to that includes Devante Peete, Jawuan Harris, Corey Holmes, Sean Bender and Damon Arnette.
Dwyer(12-0) is undefeated with their best start in school history and have outscored their opponents 521-75. They have hosted two playoff games and have blown away two Broward County opponents. They defeated the Boyd Anderson Cobras 35-8 in the regional quarterfinal and the Blanche Ely Tigers 49-7 in a regional semifinal.
The Panthers are strong in their backfield with quarterback Daniel Parr calling the signals along with running backs Alonso Smith and Gerald Hearns rushing the football. Parr will look for wide receivers Ezra Saffold, Johnnie Dixon, Shawun Lurry and Clint Stephens down the field for receptions.
