The Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs have to travel far away and face the Immokalee Indians in a Class 5A regional quarterfinal on Friday night. This is a game that has one team that was two points away from a state championship against another that is a consistent playoff contender.
Cardinal Gibbons(8-2) missed the FHSAA playoffs last year when they lost at home in a three-way tiebreaker. The Chiefs return to the postseason as the District 16-5A runner-up and will try to avoid their usual first-round exit which has been on a regular basis over the last five years. They won their first seven games of the season until they were defeated in consecutive weeks by Blanche Ely and American Heritage.
The Chiefs have experienced players in skilled positions on offense. They are loaded with wide receiver depth that can make an impact downfield which includes George Rushing, Trevon Lee and Christian Blake. Quarterback Peyton Bender is expected to rifle the ball toward any part of the field for them.
Immokalee(8-2), who are the District 15-5A champions, comes into this game on an eight-game winning streak after they lost their first two games of the regular season. The Indians had a long playoff run in 2012 as they fell to Godby 21-20 in the Class 5A championship in Orlando.
The Indians hopes to emphasize their ground attack with running back D'Ernest Johnson and quarterback Louinelson Cellan. Wide receivers Ralph Martinez and J.C. Jackson look to receive several passes in this game.
