The defending FHSAA Class 7A champion St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders begin their path toward another state title with a regional quarterfinal on Friday night as they host the Miami Springs Golden Hawks at Brian Piccolo Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
St. Thomas Aquinas(8-2) won the District 15-7A title two weeks ago with a 16-6 road win over the Plantation Colonels. It was their 16th district title in the last 17 years. They were defeated by the Deerfield Beach Bucks last week by the score of 22-7 and broke their six-game winning streak. STA has outscored their last seven opponents 289-47.
The Raiders have a strong running game with Madre London, Deltron Sands and Johnnie Gaines in the backfield. Quarterback Wade Freebeck will pass the ball down the field to wide receivers Devante Peete, Juwuan Harris, Corey Holmes. Damon Arnette and Sean Bender.
Miami Springs(7-3), who missed the FHSAA playoffs last year, finished second in District 16-7A behind American. After they lost their season opener at home, they rebounded with a five-game winning streak.
The Golden Hawks use a balanced attack on offense. Quarterback Gerald Anderson looks to hand the ball off numerous times to running back Malik Thomas. Anderson will also pass the ball out to a bunch of wide receivers which includes Johnny Rembrick, Keauvntra Floyd and Franklin Barohana.
