The Florida Panthers visited the old Northlands Coliseum, a.k.a. the house that Gretzky built, and fell to the Edmonton Oilers 4-1 on Thursday night at Rexall Place. The defeat snapped the Cats two-game win streak as they are now 2-2-0 on this five-game road swing.
Edmonton(7-15-2) wasted to little time as they got on the scoreboard during their first power play 57 seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins put a wrist shot from the top of the zone on net and Jordan Eberle knocked in the rebound from the left side of the net for his seventh goal this season.
Sam Gagner, whose father Dave once played for the Panthers, scored his first goal of the year from the slot area at 6:10 of the second period and increased their margin to 2-0. Nail Yakupov made a pass from the left circle to him for the tally.
The Oilers, who came into this game with the worst record in the Western Conference, added another power-play goal with 9:06 left in the second to make it a three-goal lead. David Perron tipped in a slapshot that Justin Schultz made from the top left circle.
Florida(6-13-4) broke the shutout with 3:26 remaining in the period. Aleksander Barkov was behind the Oilers cage, kicked the puck to Scottie Upshall who came from behind the net and snapped a shot in from the right of the crease. It was Upshall's fourth goal this season along with his 10th point in the last 11 games.
Eberle scored his second goal of the game with 1:11 to go in the third period with an empty-net goal. Taylor Hall got the primary assist as he brought the puck to the red line.
