The Dillard Panthers host the Carol City Chiefs in a Class 6A regional quarterfinal at Otis Gray Jr. Memorial Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night. The Panthers were promoted from Class 5A this year while the Chiefs returned back to the FHSAA playoffs for the first time in four years.
Dillard(7-3) was embarrassed last week as they were blown out 50-0 against Blanche Ely in the 50th annual Soul Bowl that was held at Lockhart Stadium. The Panthers lost their first two games in the regular season and followed it with seven consecutive wins against district opponents to capture the District 15-6A crown.
They look to rebound with quarterback Bud Martin calling the signals and running back Eddie Roberts IV to bust through the line of scrimmage. Martin is expected to fire the ball toward wide receivers Dennis Turner and Elijah Johnson for traction on offense. Defensive back Randy Ramsey and linebacker Arthur Kennedy leads the Panthers defense.
Carol City(7-3) had the same record last season, however this year they ended with the District 16-6A runner-up spot. The Chiefs enter this game on a roll as they have won six of their last seven games along with recent victories over Norland and American.
Quarterback Trayon Gray plans to control the offense on his running along with his passing and will look for wide receivers Edward Loveland, Shay'quan Kendrick and Theo Hammonds on pass patterns. Running back Ronneldon Ellington can be expected to get some carrries during the game.
