Deerfield Beach At St. Thomas Aquinas Preview

     The Deerfield Beach Bucks challenge the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders at Brian Piccolo Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night. Both schools have made the FHSAA playoffs on a consistent basis for over a decade.
     Deerfield Beach(3-1) upset the defending Class 6A state champion Carol City 6-2 in the season opener. The Bucks visited New Jersey and lost to St. Joseph Regional 44-21. They followed that defeat with two easy home victories over Dillard and Taravella. Their game against local rival Blanche Ely, known as the McDougle Bowl, was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma and will not be made up.
     Running backs Jakari Norwood and Jaylan Knighton expect the get their opportunities to carry the ball for the Bucks. They have options at wide receiver with Cornelius McCoy, Donte Banton and Daejeun McDougle for quarterbacks Tyler Herring and Kyle Kaplan to connect with.
     St. Thomas Aquinas(3-1) lost last weekend in Arizona to Centennial 12-0. They won their home opener in overtime over St. John Bosco 9-3. STA followed that with two home shutout wins over Piper 44-0 and Stranahan 40-0. They were listed as the top seed of the first ever FHSAA playoff point system standings released on Tuesday for Class 7A in Region 4.
     The Raiders have a strong wide receiver core that consists of Elijah Moore, Tavares Kelly, Teriq Philips and Cole Caterbone. They have numerous options in the backfield with quarterback Curt Casteel along with running backs Daniel Carter and Samuel Llewellyn.
