Longtime Florida Panthers beat writer George Richards is leaving the Miami Herald at the end of this week. He has been associated with their sports department for 28 years. He will be joining the Columbus Dispatch as their Columbus Blue Jackets beat writer.
Richards, a Cooper City High School and University of Miami grad, first worked at the Miami Herald in 1989 as an aget clerk compiling sports statistics. He became a sports writer with the newspaper in 1992 and mainly covered high school athletics.
He replaced David J. Neal as the Miami Herald Panthers reporter while the NHL was in a lockout during 2005. Richards has the longest reign as a newspaper sports writer covering the franchise for 12 NHL seasons. The Miami Herald decided to limit their coverage of the Florida Panthers last month.
