The Florida Panthers made a rare appearance in a nationally televised game as they beat the Washington Capitals 4-1 at Capital One Arena on Saturday night. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Cats. It was the only visit for the Panthers to Washington D.C. this season.
Florida(3-4-0) jumped up to a 1-0 lead just 1:26 into the contest. Connor Brickley, who was scratched in the last two games, collected his second goal of the season in front of the net on a pass by Jared McCann from behind the Capitals cage.
The Panthers increased their lead to 2-0 on the power play with 30 seconds left in the first. Evgenii Dadonov scored the goal with assists from Jonathan Huberdeau and Vincent Trocheck.
In the second period, Florida scored on a 5-on-3 power play. Aleksander Barkov slid the puck from the low right circle across to Trocheck in the left circle. He waited then fired a slap shot by Philipp Grubauer at the 7:58 mark.
Washington(4-4-1) broke the shutout with 4:37 left in the second. Devante Smith-Pelley placed a pass from the right corner to Christian Djoos on the right wing. He skated into the high slot and released a wrist shot by James Reimer.
The Cats finished the game with an empty-net shorthanded goal by Barkov with 1:16 remaining in the third period. He recovered the puck in the defensive slot area and backhanded it down the length of the ice.
