Former Florida Panthers beat reporter Michael Russo has won the inaugural Red Fisher Award from the Professional Hockey Writers Association. The award is given by the PHWA to the top overall beat writer who best exemplifies and covers the National Hockey League over a given season.
Russo was the Panthers writer for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel from the 1996-97 season until September 2005. He moved on to the Star Tribune to become the Minnesota Wild beat reporter and held that position until August 2017. Russo recently joined The Athletic in September.
