The Florida Panthers finished a quick two-game road trip through Pennsylvania and lost to the Philadelphia Flyers 5-1 on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center. 2017 first-round draft pick Owen Tippett made his National Hockey League debut for Florida. The Panthers return home on Friday and take on the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.
After a scoreless first period, Philadelphia(4-2-0) blitzed with four goals during the second period. Sean Couturier made it 1-0 at 1:05 with assists from Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux. They extended it to a two-goal margin as South Florida native Shayne Gostisbehere scored from the left circle at the 7:35 mark. Wayne Simmonds and Robert Hagg were credited assists on the play.
The Flyers scored on the power play with 6:38 left in the second to make it 3-0. Valtteri Filppula sent a lead pass from his own crease area ahead to Giroux at the Panthers blue line. He skated in alone and snapped in a shot from the slot region by Roberto Luongo.
Florida(2-3-0) surrendered another goal on a delayed penalty with 3:44 to go in the frame. Travis Konecny came in on a breakaway and took a shot which Luongo saved. Nolan Patrick lightly tipped the puck to his right and Dale Weise softly put it in from the top of the crease.
The Panthers finally broke the shutout with 3:50 left in the third on the power play. A Radim Vrbata pass from the right wing was angled by Nick Bjugstad in the slot and Jamie McGinn followed in from the left side of the crease for his first goal with his new club. Filppula won a faceoff at the Flyers blue line and poked the puck down the ice into an empty net with 1:37 remaining.
