The Florida Panthers lost to the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night at BB&T Center. It was the second game of a five-game home stand for the Panthers. The Red Wings snapped a six-game losing streak with the win.
The Panthers string of scoring first early at home finally ended. Detroit(5-6-1) moved out to a 1-0 lead at the 5:28 mark. Alex Petrovic turned the puck over on the end wall to Dylan Larkin in the left corner. Larkin centered it to Andreas Athanasiou in the slot area and he scored on a slap shot past James Reimer.
In the second period, Florida(4-5-1) tied the contest up 1-1 at 4:19. Evgenii Dadonov snapped a shot from above the right circle and Jonathan Huberdeau deflected it from the top of the crease by Jimmy Howard for his fourth goal this season. The Panthers later had a Huberdeau goal disallowed at the 7:15 mark. Aleksander Barkov was called for goalie interference on the play.
The Cats converted on their third power play at 8:23 and took their first lead 2-1. Vincent Trocheck put a slap pass from the top of the right circle to the slot and Dadonov redirected it into the Detroit cage for his team-high fifth goal of the year.
The Red Wings responded fast and tied it up 2-2 just over two minutes later. Gustav Nyquist went through the slot area as Aaron Ekblad poked the puck from him toward the Panthers net. Nyquist raced in for the rebound and scored on a backhand shot.
After neither team scored in the third period and overtime, the game went into a shootout. Detroit scored on their third attempt when Nyquist skated in and put a snap shot between the legs of Reimer for the victory.
