Michael Badgley kicked a 24-yard field goal with eight seconds left to give the Miami Hurricanes a 25-24 victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday. The Hurricanes are off to a 5-0 start for the first time since 2013.
Miami(5-0, 3-0) got out to a 3-0 lead on a Badgley 33-yard field goal at 8:14 of the first quarter. Georgia Tech(3-2, 2-1) went ahead 7-3 on a five-yard touchdown run by running back J.J. Green at 4:33 of the first quarter.
The Yellow Jackets scored on the third play of the second quarter when quarterback TaQuon Marshall threw a three-yard pass to Green at the 14:33 mark.
Badgley added another field goal for the Canes from 32 yards at 10:15. Quarterback Malik Rosier connected a 17-yard touchdown pass on the left side to running back Travis Homer with 16 seconds left in the second to make it 14-13.
The second half began in a shocking way as Lamont Simmons returned an on-side kick 42 yards for a score. Brenton King later converted on a 31-yard field goal for the Yellow Jackets at 5:56 and extended their margin to 24-13. Badgley nailed a 21-yard field goal with 3:36 to go in the third.
The Hurricanes dominated in the fourth quarter. Homer, an Oxbridge Academy grad, rushed through the right side for a 27-yard touchdown with 13:42 left. Badgley put the Canes ahead 25-24 with a 24-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining in the contest.
