The Atlantic Eagles needed three touchdowns in the first half to hold off the Dwyer Panthers 21-12 at Blum Stadium on Friday night. Both teams are former district rivals that made the FHSAA playoffs last season.
Dwyer(1-1) scored on their first possession at 10:34 of the first quarter. Quarterback Trevor Omans threw a screen pass to the left side and running back Reggie Gadsen brought it into the end zone from 45 yards away to make it 6-0.
It would be a measure of revenge that got Atlantic(1-1) the 7-6 lead. Wide receiver Varrick Lurry-Davis, who transferred from Dwyer to Atlantic earlier this year. caught a nine-yard touchdown on the right side of the end zone from quarterback Antoine Williams II at the 4:19 mark.
The Eagles struck again with 44.8 seconds remaining in the first to go up 14-6. Running back Shelley Singletary rushed to the left side and scored from four yards out. It was set up on a 60-yard catch by running back Cadarius Gaskin on the previous play.
In the second quarter, the Panthers closed the margin to 14-12 at 5:43. Backup quarterback Paul Whitely was called in from close range. He scrambled through the left side of the line and scored on a one-yard touchdown run.
Williams got his second touchdown pass of the contest for the Eagles with 44.1 seconds left in the first half. Wide receiver Corey Gammage caught a 10-yard reception in the back right corner of the end zone.
There were few scoring chances by both teams in the second half. The best opportunity was a 37-yard field goal by Dwyer that was blocked by Atlantic with 7:37 to go in the fourth quarter.
