Giancarlo Stanton hit his 58th and 59th home runs of the season as the Miami Marlins took the Atlanta Braves 7-1 at Marlins Park on Thursday night. Stanton joined Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Maris and Babe Ruth as the seventh person in Major League Baseball history to get 59 home runs in a year.
Miami(75-84) compiled four runs in the bottom of the third. Dee Gordon would score on a wild pitch by Braves starting pitcher Julio Teheran. Justin Bour knocked in Stanton and Christian Yelich with a base hit into left field. Two batters later, Derek Dietrich hit a sacrifice fly to left and Marcell Ozuna crossed the plate.
In the fourth inning, Stanton smashed a solo homer to left field on the first pitch for his 58th home run to make it 5-0.
Atlanta(71-88) waited until the seventh inning to score. Lane Adams cracked a solo home run to center on a 2-0 count.
The Marlins generated two additional runs during the bottom of the eighth. Stanton blasted a two-run home run to left field on the first pitch for his 59th homer of the year and Gordon scored in front of him.
