Panthers Paddle By Sharks

The Florida Panthers blew a two-goal lead and still held off the San Jose Sharks 4-3 in a shootout at SAP Center on Thursday night. The Panthers continued on their four-game road swing. The Sharks are winless in their last seven contests against the Cats.
Florida(6-4-1) pulled out to a 1-0 lead with 6:17 left in the first period. Aleksander Barkov scored on a power-play goal with a wrist shot from the left-circle dot and beat former Panthers goalie James Reimer for his second goal of the campaign. Anton Lundell and Matthew Tkachuk chalked up assists on the tally.
In the second period, the Panthers extended their lead to 2-0 with 4:10 remaining. Radko Gudas blasted a one-time slap shot from the left point for his first goal of the year on assists from Tkachuk and Carter Verhaeghe.
San Jose(3-8-2) closed it to 2-1 as they scored on a 5-on-3 power play at the 1:04 mark. Timo Meier placed a one-time slap shot from the right-circle dot past Sergei Bobrovsky for his fourth goal of the season.
The Sharks evened it up 2-2 at 6:34 to continue their momentum in the frame. Erik Karlsson ripped a snap shot from above the left circle for his 10th goal of the year. It was the first assist this season for Nick Bonino.
It became 3-2 for San Jose with 8:12 left in the third. Matt Benning ended a 105-game NHL drought with his go-ahead tally as he snapped a shot from the top of the zone. Karlsson now has seven points in the last three games.
The Cats pulled their goalie with 2:16 to go for an extra attacker. Verhaeghe tied the game 3-3 from the low left circle with 1:22 remaining in the period and marked his fifth goal of the season. Tkachuk got his third assist of the contest and now leads Florida with 11 assists this season. Lundell ended up with a multi-point game with his second assist.
In the shootout, the Panthers waited awhile to get the victory. Sam Reinhart lifted the puck with his wrist shot on Florida's fourth attempt. It was the only attempt converted by both teams during the shootout.
