Panthers Shut Out Hurricanes

The Florida Panthers blanked the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 at FLA Live Arena on Wednesday night. It was the third career shutout for Panthers goalie Spencer Knight. Florida head coach Paul Maurice passed Al Arbour for sixth all-time with 783 NHL wins.
The Panthers had played nine of their first 13 games of the 2022-23 regular season on the road entering tonight's contest. The Panthers just completed a four-game, west coast road trip.
Panthers center Eric Staal played in his 1,300th National Hockey League game. He also was on the same team with his brother Panthers defenseman Marc Staal against his other brother Hurricanes center Jordan Staal.
Florida(8-5-1) took a 1-0 lead at the 9:21 mark of the first period. Sam Bennett pushed the puck from the right corner. Brandon Montour snapped a shot from the right point which was deflected by Nick Cousins from the right of the crease that was saved by Antti Raanta. Cousins reached for the rebound and swept it in from the top of the crease for his first goal in a Panthers uniform.
There was no scoring by either club during the second period of play. In the third period, the Panthers increased their lead over Carolina(8-4-1) on a power-play goal 2-0 with 9:40 left. Aleksander Barkov make a give-and-go passing sequence with Carter Verhaeghe in the slot area and he scored his third tally of the campaign. Montour was credited with the secondary assist.
The Hurricanes attempted to get back into this game by pulling their goalie for an extra attacker with 2:55 to go. Bennett eventually got an empty-net goal from the high slot with six seconds remaining for a three-goal margin.
