The Miami Dolphins held off the New Orleans Saints 21-17 at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday. The Dolphins came off a bye week and picked up their third straight victory. The Saints won their only Super Bowl title at this venue.
Miami(5-7) quickly got in front 7-0 at the 11:19 mark of the first quarter. De'Von Achane sprinted around the right end on a 29-yard touchdown run.
The Fins would have a 16-0 lead by halftime. Riley Patterson had three field goals during the second quarter from 39 yards at 14:13, 25 yards at 6:10 and 48 yards with two seconds left in the first half.
New Orleans(2-10) broke the shutout at 10:40 of the third quarter. Tyler Shough fired a 17-yard touchdown pass to Chris Olave down the right sideline. They added a two-point conversion on a running attempt to make it 16-8.
In the fourth quarter, the Dolphins expanded their lead to 19-7 at the 9:42 mark of the final quarter. Patterson booted a 33-yard field goal.
The Saints attempted to pull off a comeback. Charlie Smyth helped out with a long 56-yard field goal with 6:13 to go and they were down 19-11.
Shough connected a 15-yard touchdown pass to Devaughn Vele to make it 19-17 with 1:23 left in the fourth. Their two-point conversion to tie the contest was intercepted by Minkah Fitzpatrick and he returned to the end zone to give Miami a 21-17 lead.
