The 2017 FHSAA football playoffs began last week in South Florida. There were 43 high schools that were representing Dade County, Broward County and Palm Beach County. The classification that had the most lower seeds defeat the higher seeds locally was in Class 8A.
Region 4 of Class 8A saw #2 Palmetto lose to district rival #7 Miami 28-0, defending state champion #6 Southridge topped #3 Belen Jesuit 35-14 and #5 South Dade beat #4 North Miami 21-3. The top seed #1 Columbus, who could eventually host a state semifinal game, blanked #8 Homestead 50-0.
Class 8A in Region 3 had possibly the biggest upset in South Florida as #8 Park Vista shocked #1 Miramar 28-20. #7 Western also upended a state semifinalist last year #2 Deerfield Beach 20-17. #3 Palm Beach Central moved to the new top seed in that region with a shutout victory over #6 Seminole Ridge 32-0 while #4 Atlantic beat #5 Plantation 29-14.

Dade County almost dominated the first round in Region 4 of Class 6A. #1 Miami Northwestern slammed #8 Matanzas 33-0, #6 Carol City shut out #3 Dillard 23-0 and #5 Miami Central defeated #4 Heritage 42-6. They missed the sweep as #7 Norland lost to Mainland 21-12.
Class 5A in Region 4 saw #1 American Heritage, who may host a state semifinal, wipe out #8 Merritt Island 42-0. #6 Cardinal Gibbons visited Orlando and topped #3 Jones 43-30.
Looking at the small school classifications, Region 4 of Class 1A had the top seed #1 Pahokee defeat #4 Williston 41-17 in a regional semifinal. Class 2A saw #2 Champagnat Catholic beat #3 St. John Neumann 44-12 while #4 Glades Day lost to #1 Moore Haven 42-35.
