The Miami Heat has named John Crotty as their new television game analyst. He will replace the retiring Tony Fiorentino in that role following the 2017-18 season alongside play-by-play announcer Eric Reid. Crotty will be the seventh television game analyst in team history following Reid, Dave Wohl, Jack Ramsey, Ed Pinckney, Mike Fratello and Fiorentino.
Crotty was first noticed playing high school basketball with Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, New Jersey and moved on to the University of Virginia to play college basketball. He entered the NBA with the Utah Jazz in 1992 and participated with seven different NBA clubs in his 11-season career. Crotty joined the Miami Heat for one season in 1996-97 and he helped the franchise win their first Atlantic Division title and get to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time.
He went into a broadcasting career and joined radio play-by-play announcer Mike Inglis as the radio analyst on the Miami Heat Radio Network in January 2005. Crotty has mainly worked home games while Inglis did road games alone.
Crotty was given the opportunity to do television work during the NBA postseason from 2005 to 2012 as a studio analyst on Sun Sports with Jason Jackson. He added duties as a studio analyst of Miami Heat road games on Sun Sports at the start of the 2012-13 regular season with studio host Jorge Sedano and later paired with Will Manso.
