The Florida began a short two-game road trip through the New York metropolitan area and beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 at Prudential Center on Monday night. Roberto Luongo became the second goalie in NHL history to win 200 games with two different clubs. The Panthers play Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers.
The Panthers defense were able to prevent the Devils to get a shot on goal in the first seven minutes of the contest. The Cats outshot their opponent 16-3 in the first period. It tied a season-high for the Panthers with the least shots allowed in a period. They gave up three shots to the Kings in Los Angeles during the second period back on November 18.
Florida(9-12-2) broke the tie as the team got their league-leading fifth shorthanded goal of the season with 2:40 left in the second period. Aleksander Barkov brought the puck up the left side on a 2-on-1 breakaway. He reached the top of the slot and ripped a wrist shot past Corey Schneider. It was the third shorthanded goal by Barkov this season which ties Evander Kane of the Buffalo Sabres for the NHL lead.
In the third period, New Jersey(14-6-4) tied the contest up 1-1 at 2:20. Devils rookie Nico Hischier put in his fifth goal of the year by Luongo on an assist from Pavel Zacha.
The Panthers regained the lead at the 4:07 mark. Vincent Trocheck carried the puck through the neutral zone and into the Devils zone. He waited until he got to the top right circle and snapped a shot into the cage for his 10th goal of the season.
The Devils got a fortunate bounce on a play to tie the game 2-2 with 11:41 left in the third. Jesper Bratt caught a loose puck at the right goal line and centered the puck. It went off the right skate of Aaron Ekblad in the crease and into the Panthers net.
The Cats took their third lead of the game with 7:15 left. Jared McCann took an initial shot that was blocked and then he scooped a backhand shot in from below the right circle.
