The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders host the South Miami Cobras at Brian Piccolo Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night in a regional quarterfinal. The Raiders look to win their fourth consecutive Class 7A state championship in 2017.
South Miami(6-3) made the playoffs for the first time since 2011. The Cobras had won four straight games until they lost last week to Mater Academy. They began the campaign with a 2-2 record.
Quarterback A.J. Wright will call the signals for the Cobras on offense and his primary targets are wide receivers Gerand Turner and Julio Iglesias. Running backs Elijah Woodley and Carlos Lopez look to gain yardage.
St. Thomas Aquinas(8-2) lost at home last week to Miramar that broke a four-game winning streak. The Raiders captured their 20th district title in the last 21 years. STA has not been eliminated in the first round of the FHSAA playoffs in the 21st century and have not lost a home playoff game since 2003. They outscored their opponents 256-86 this season and averaged 25 points for and eight points against per game.
The Raiders are led by quarterback Curt Casteel and running back Daniel Carter will get the majority of carries from the backfield. They have a bulk of wide receivers that includes Tavares Kelly, Elijah Moore, Teriq Phillips and Cole Caterbone.
