The three-time defending FHSAA Class 7A state champion St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders host the Doral Academy Firebirds on Friday night at Brian Piccolo Stadium in a regional final. The Raiders have not lost a playoff game since losing at Dwyer in 2013.
Doral Academy(10-2) are making their second playoff appearance in school history and have never gotten this deep into the postseason. The Firebirds beat Nova 36-26 last week in a regional quarterfinal then went on the road last week and got by Dwyer 6-5 in a regional semifinal. They have outscored their opponents 438-152 this year and averaged 36 points per game.
Wide receivers Brieon Fuller and Natavious Payne intend to get open down the field for pass receptions from quarterback Myles Hayes. The Firebirds rushing attack will depend on running back Shemar Paul to gain yardage.
St. Thomas Aquinas(10-2) appears in a regional final for the 13th time in the last 14 years and have not lost a home playoff game since 2003. The Raiders have dominated in their last two playoff games as they dismantled South Miami 56-0 in a regional quarterfinal and last week defeated West Broward 38-7 in a regional semifinal. STA has outscored opponents 350-93 this season as they averaged 29 points for and seven points against per game.
Derek Wingo has filled in well recently for Curt Casteel at quarterback for the Raiders. Running back Daniel Carter will get a load of rushing attempts from the backfield and Nigel White could see some action. The core of wide receivers for St. Thomas Aquinas includes Elijah Moore, Tavares Kelly, Teriq Phillips and Cole Caterbone.
