Panthers Hold Off Maple Leafs

The Florida Panthers returned home and beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 in a shootout at BB&T Center on Wednesday night. The Panthers recently finished a three-game California trip and have played six of their last seven games on the road.
Toronto(14-8-1) gave up 11 unanswered shots to begin the first period before they put one on net with 11:32 left in the period. The Cats had a 14-2 shot advantage in the first 14 minutes of play.
In the second period, Florida(8-11-2) made it 1-0 with 4:44 left. Nick Bjugstad was behind the Maple Leafs cage and backhanded a centering pass. It went off the right skate of defender Connor Carrick and past Frederik Andersen. Henrik Haapala, who made his NHL debut with the Panthers, was credited with an assist on the play along with Vincent Trocheck.
The Maple Leafs tied the contest at the 13:58 mark of the third period when MacKenzie Weegar pinched in at center ice to cause a 2-on-1 break. Connor Brown entered the Panthers zone on the left side, sent a cross-ice pass to Nazem Kadri in the right circle and he snapped a shot over the left glove of Roberto Luongo for his 11th goal of the season.
The game would be decided in a shootout. Aleksander Barkov scored with a one-handed backhand shot on the Panthers second attempt. Patrick Marleau kept Toronto alive with a wrist shot through the legs of Luongo on their third attempt. Bjugstad put in a shot on the Cats fourth attempt when he delayed and then lifted a wrist shot.
