The Florida Panthers began their three-game swing through California with a 2-0 win over the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Thursday night. Roberto Lunogo compiled his 74th shutout in his NHL career.
The Panthers swept the California trip last season. The Cats are in a middle of a stretch in which they play six of seven games on the road.
After no scoring in the first period, Florida(7-9-2) struck one minute into the second period. Colton Sceviour carried the puck by the end wall around the Sharks net and stuffed in a forehand shot by Martin Jones for a 1-0 lead. Connor Brickley and Vincent Trocheck were credited with assists on the play.
The Sharks had a goal negated at 4:37. Tim Heed fired a slap shot from outside of the blue line for an offside call and the goal was disallowed.
In the third period, San Jose(10-6-0) had another goal turned over with 14:44 left due to goalie interference. Marc-Edouard Vlasic came to the crease and pushed the right leg pad of Luongo into the net with the puck underneath it.
The Panthers got more breathing room and extended their margin to 2-0 with 7:37 remaining. Radim Vrbata sent the puck from the left corner to former Shark Jamie McGinn in the low left circle. He made a no-look backhand pass to the low slot and Nick Bjugstad lifted a one-time shot for his fourth goal of the season.
