The Mater Academy Lions make the long trip up I-95 to Palm Beach Gardens and challenge the Dwyer Panthers at Blum Stadium in a Class 7A regional quarterfinal on Friday night. It is the first playoff meeting between both schools.
Mater Academy have ended their playoff run in the last couple of years by St. Thomas Aquinas. They comes off a victory last week over South Miami and had lost during the regular season to playoff-bound schools Columbus and Doral Academy.
The Lions brought in Steve Williams as quarterback after he transferred from Miramar. They do have a set of running backs with Lentivone Lesane and Takori Thurston. Williams intends to find wide receivers Dwayne Menders and John Cooper along with tight end Motavious Brini.
Dwyer(7-2) captured their third consecutive district title this year. After a shocking upset to district rival Olympic Heights, the Panthers compiled five straight victories to cap the regular season. They did get wins over Class 8A schools Park Vista, Palm Beach Gardens and Wellington this season.
The Panthers have numerous running backs to hand the ball of to which includes Reggie Gasden, Cedric Turner and Bobby Armes. Wide receivers Derrick Smith, Cephus Smith, Andrew Kasten, Rudy Antoine and Zephanijah Fletcher will try to make catches from quarterback Trevor Omans.
