The Pahokee Blue Devils defeated the Glades Central 33-27 in overtime in the annual Muck Bowl at Effie C. Grear Field in Belle Glade on Friday night. It was the first time in history that the Muck Bowl was tied after four quarters and went into overtime.
The Blue Devils won the Muck Bowl for the second straight year. Glades Central had won eight consecutive contests between both schools from 2008 to 2015.
Pahokee will move on and host a Class 1A regional semifinal in Region 4 next week and hope for a return to Orlando for a state championship. Glades Central will be a top four seed to qualify for the Class 4A playoffs in Region 4.
Glades Central(6-3) jumped out to a 7-0 lead at 8:36 of the first quarter. Quarterback Davious Richards found wide receiver Jymetre Hester with a 20-yard touchdown pass.
Pahokee(7-2) answered back with a score early in the second quarter and were down 7-6. Running back Jatarie Washington rushed in from the left side for a touchdown from 16 yards away at the 11:11 mark.
After Richards lost the ball on a fumble, the Blue Devils capitalized and scored on their next possession to take the lead. Washington busted through the middle for a three-yard touchdown at 7:30. They converted on a two-point conversion and moved ahead 14-7.
The Raiders tied it up 14-14 with 3:57 remaining in the first half. Running back Steve Barrett plunged in through the line from one yard out.
The Blue Devils turned the ball over on a LeVonski Williams fumble in their first drive of the second half. Richards connected a 23-yard strike to wide receiver Dejuan Miller for a score and a Glades Central 21-14 lead at 8:50 of the third quarter.
It took a fast response for Pahokee to tie the contest 21-21 at the 6:26 mark. Washington raced five yards around the left side for his third touchdown of the game.
In the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils were able to regain the lead. Kevin Hernandez kicked a 25-yard field goal to make it 24-21 at 10:34.
Glades Central answered back with another lead change with 4:41 left in the fourth. Richards sneaked in with a one-yard touchdown run for a 27-24 lead. They decided to go for a two-point conversion and it failed.
The Blue Devils were able to tie the contest 27-27 in the final minute of regulation. Hernandez was called on and he nailed a 40-yard field goal with 54.3 seconds remaining and the Muck Bowl went into overtime for the first time in its history.
The Raiders had the first opportunity on offense with the ball. They were pushed back from the original line of scrimmage at the 10-yard line through good defense by Pahokee along with a delay-of-game penalty. Glades Central decided to go for it on fourth down from the Blue Devils 20-yard line and Richards threw and interception.
Pahokee got their shot to win the game on their possession and they did. Washington scored his fourth touchdown run of the contest.
