Soul Bowl 2017 Preview

The Dillard Panthers take on the Blanche Ely Tigers in the annual Soul Bowl at Richard L. Williams Stadium in Pompano Beach on Saturday night. Blanche Ely, who have won the last four consecutive Soul Bowl games and seven of the last eight contests between both schools, defeated Dillard 13-7 in overtime last year. The Soul Bowl will not be played in Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale for the first time in over a decade.
Dillard(5-4) clinched District 15 two weeks ago and will host a Class 6A regional quarterfinal next week. The Panthers lost their first three games of the regular season, responded with a five-game winning streak and lost this past Monday to Cardinal Gibbons. Running back Keyondre White will get the bulk of the carries. Wide receivers Bryce Oliver, Joshua Freeman, Elijah Black and Dandre Jones look to make receptions from quarterback Moise Francois.
Blanche Ely(2-7) fell to St. Thomas Aquinas for the District 14 title in Class 7A last week. They will not make the FHSAA playoffs this year because district runner-ups no longer get an automatic playoff spots. The Tigers began the regular season 2-2 and are currently on a five-game losing streak. Quarterback Yanez Rogers leads the Tigers offense and can connect passes to wide receivers Akeem Hayes, Dashaun Davis and Markel Grant down the field.
